Senja is the second biggest island in Norway. A fairytale island which is so beautiful that you will wonder why you never came here before. In a dramatic landscape where mountains plunge straight down into the sea, you will find houses and people clinging tightly to the land, close to the sea which has given them everything. The ‘Senja Troll’ is one of the island’s symbols, based on the troll that you might encounter on the island or out at sea. Or the ‘Man in Ausa’, a mountain which has eyes and a face. But when you meet the local people, you meet hospitable folk who work hard under conditions which can be tough at times, and which have given rise to powerful true stories and myths which have lasted for generations. With a generous yet cruel sea, shipwrecks have generated new cultural mixes and rituals like the daily Spanish siesta in the village of Gryllefjord..
